The short answer
Yes, it can. At firms that measure the daily loss on equity, an open trade's floating loss counts the moment it appears, and a fill that slips past your stop is a real loss. The firm judges the number, not the reason. A separate risk is the news rule itself: some firms restrict any order execution, including stop loss and take profit fills, in a window around listed releases.

FTMO
- The Maximum Daily Loss is a limit "below which your account equity (i.e., Balance + Open Positions P/L ± Swaps – Commissions) cannot drop." It is 5% of the initial capital on the 2-Step and 3% on the 1-Step, recalculated daily at 00:00 CE(S)T from that day's starting balance. Source: FTMO Trading Objectives
- News: FTMO "restricts order execution for 2 minutes before and 2 minutes after selected news releases," and this "applies to any order execution, including your Stop Loss, Take Profit or any other pending orders." Positions opened more than 2 minutes before the event may be held. Source: FTMO: Can I trade news?

Three ways a news release eats the daily limit
- Floating loss on an open trade. If the limit counts equity, a fast move against you counts before you close anything. On MetaTrader, open trades are usually valued at the current bid or ask, so a wider spread can also lower equity for a moment.
- Slippage past the stop. A stop placed to lose 1% can fill worse in a fast market. Plan your daily room around a worse fill, not the exact stop.
- A stop or target filling inside the restricted window. At FTMO this counts as order execution in the window, even if you placed the order hours earlier.
What to check before the next big release
- Find the firm's news window and which instruments it covers for that event.
- Note your room to the daily limit in money, measured the way your firm measures it (equity or balance).
- Decide whether to close, hold with no SL/TP changes, or stay flat, based on the firm's own rule text.
- After the week, run your history through a check so you see any trade that landed in a window before you request a payout.
